Top Natural Treatments for Rosacea (And What to Do If They Don’t Work)

Rosacea is a very common skin condition. It is a type of inflammation that appears as a rash. It usually develops in the teens or early 20s and continues to worsen into later years. Those suffering from rosacea usually show signs of a red, flushed face. In many cases, other symptoms occur, such as:

• Spider veins
• Swelling and/or painful areas of the skin
• Sensitivity to sun, skin care products
• Feeling sweaty or hot
• Stinging and burning
• Acne breakouts
• Areas of plaque
• Thickening of the skin, particularly around the nose
• Sensitivity of the skin around the eyes

While it is similar to other types of skin rashes such as acne, eczema, hives, and psoriasis, there are actually four different types of rosacea—each depending upon the symptoms presented.

Natural Rosacea Treatments

There are several different home or natural remedies that can alleviate many of the symptoms of rosacea outlined below.

Green Tea — Soak a cloth in chilled green tea and apply to affected areas. The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea can help reduce inflammation, as well as redness.

Oatmeal – Mix ½ cup of ground oats with ¼ cup of water to create a paste. Apply to affected areas for about 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Honey — Honey can help your skin retain moisture. Simply massage some honey into the affected skin and let it rest for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

It is also recommended that you change your diet to exclude any allergies or foods that can cause skin reactions. Additionally, you should wear sunscreen to prevent skin irritations caused by UV light that can cause flare-ups, irritation, and redness.

Available Medical Treatments

Should the natural remedies not alleviate your condition satisfactorily, or if you are concerned that the severity of your case needs medical attention, there are several treatments for rosacea available.

Dr. Thomas Wright says, “If you find that natural rosacea treatments are not effective, there are several medical treatments available, including dermabrasion, prescription medications, and laser or light therapy.”
