Top Ways to Keep the Christmas Fat Away

We have sad news for you: Your metabolism doesn’t know its Christmas! The holiday season is beloved for its many feasts and festivals, but you don’t want to be fat after Christmas, once the cheer disappears and you step back on the scale. Don’t be reactive with a New Year’s resolution—be proactive by following these tips to keep the pounds off while you still enjoy your holiday season.

Foods to Avoid

This is common knowledge, but Christmas cookies, fudge, and other such delights hit hard. All the sugar and fat combines in a thigh-thickening, gut-growing delight. You’ll have to take it easy on these. Also, be wary of partying too hard—lots of calories hide in festive drinks.

Portion Control

In general, you can eat whatever you want—just not very much of it. For many gatherings, the problem is not the food served, but how much of it there is. Don’t get the largest plate—get the size plate you would normally get, and make the difficult decision of which dishes are privileged enough to go on it. When you’re done eating, don’t get seconds. Instead, take your plate immediately to the sink or the trash (if disposable). If you’re not full, congratulations! Portion control means eating until you’re no longer hungry, not until you’re stuffed.

Staying Active

While weight loss happens more in the kitchen than the gym, the importance of regular exercise cannot be overstressed—especially in a month where many of us are, ourselves, already overstressed. Exercise is important to keeping a healthy metabolism and putting some of those extra calories to good use. Besides, when so many of us are dealing with crunch times at work, exercise is one of the best stress-relievers, even when it’s hard to convince ourselves to do it. This in turn prevents us from eating away our stress, making exercise a win-win-win!

If you prefer to exercise outside, you can still do that even as we approach most place’s coldest month of the year. Look into lightweight jackets, running socks, and an ear-covering headband.
